To boost up green energy Indian Railways and The Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (NMRCL) are planning to use solar power. Railways proposes to harness solar energy by utilising roof-top space of railway stations, other railway buildings and land including through the PPP mode as per the feasibility, the modalities of which are being worked out.
As part of this they had already rolled out a non-AC coach of Rewari-Sitapur passenger train, installed solar panels on its roof as per the plan. It cost about Rs 3.90 lakh for equipping and will save Rs 1.24 LPA. Also they have equipped top of coaches of two narrow-gauge trains plying on Pathankot-Jogindernagar route in Kangra Valley section and Kalka-Shimla section on trial basis.
A senior Northern Railway official said Shan-e-Punjab Express and Taj Express are going to be equipped with solar power shortly. For the next five years the plan is to procure 100MW of solar power. On evaluation of trial and cost benefit analysis, further study of economic viability will be undertaken.
Solar energy generated per panel is 17units which backs lighting system in the coach.
With the similar approach NMRCL plans to use solar power in a big way. As per a senior official NMRCL plans to install a 30 MW capacity solar plant which can be used for the Metro railway stations. The solar system, once installed, will meet 40 per cent of the energy requirement, including traction power. NMRCL Managing Director Brajesh Dixit, accompanied by assistant engineer Rajiv Yelkawar, had visited Frankfurt and Berlin earlier this month to study the project's feasibility.
The German agencies also showed readiness to fund the Rs 3,000 crore needed for the Metro project, Dixit said.
In a milestone in adoption of green fuel in Indian Railways, the first CNG train has been launched on the Rewari-Rohtak section of Northern zone. The DEMU train will run on dual fuel system - CNG and diesel. Introduction of CNG train will reduce greenhouse gas emission by the Railways and also the consumption of diesel.Railways have modified the 1,400 HP engine to run on dual fuel - diesel and CNG - through fumigation technology.
The Rewari passenger train will consume over 20% of the CNG, covering 81 km long distance in about two hours.
